1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Materials management covers the entire cycle of supplies. In modern and progressive organization like Metro Railway; complete control on the materials is vested in the stores department under the Principal Chief Materials Manager directly responsible to the General Manager. The Department ensures availability of raw materials; semi finished & finished components, consumables, General stores, machinery & plants and spares for production, maintenance and operational requirement of Metro Railway, Kolkata. It was possible to maintain uninterrupted supplies and quality materials in time to user departments at minimum cost. The Department could achieve optimum investment in inventories, purchasing cost, and inventory carrying costs, number of stock-outs and percentage of obsolescent materials. The major focus attention is being given on the activities of reduction in materials costs through standardization, variety reduction, import substitutions and application of techniques contributing towards reduction in the overall cost. Department could fulfill responsibilities of public accountability at all stages of transactions relating to purchase, storage, issue and sale of materials in the best interest of the organization.
1.2 Material management department is responsible to provide total material support to Metro Railway, Kolkata for operation, maintenance, construction and POH activities. Department could discharged its responsibilities of materials supply in most efficient and expeditious manner at an optimum cost. In addition, the Department could extend its contribution in generation of internal resources through effective expenditure control, inventory management and disposal of scrap.
2.0 The Headquarter Organization:
The Headquarter Stores Organization is located at the fifth (5 th ) Floor, Metro Rail Bhavan, 33/1, J.L.Nehru Road (Near Park Street Metro RailwayStation ) Kolkata – 700071, Phone No. & Fax – 033 22262421 (BSNL), 55650 (Rly.) and functions under the overall control of the Principal Chief Materials Manager assisted by well qualified CMM, Dy. CMM, SMMs, AMM and Group- C 36 Nos & Group- D 13 Nos staff. The organization is basically bifurcated in two areas like Operation & Maintenance and Construction Activities.
3.0 DEPOT ORGINIZATION - There is only one Stores Depots in Metro Railway, who deals with functions relating to receipt, inspection, storage, and issues of materials and other related activities.
3.1Noapara Depot – It is a major depot & is located near Noapara Metro Railway Station, Noapara Car shed Complex, Kolkata – 700090, Sr. Material Manager is the in charge of Noapara Depot, Phone No. 033-25281033 (BSNL) and 53566 Railway. Noapara Depot deals with materials required for POH shop and running maintenance shed at Noapara.This is one of the major depot in Metro railway, feeding materials for POH activities and running maintenance of BHEL ,NGEF and ICF AC coaches.The depot functions under the overall administrative control of SMM who is assisted by 16
Group-C and 15 Group-D staff.The depot is stocking 377 including 66 safety items.It also deals with non-stock charged off items as custody stores. Besides, Stationary items are deal with there to feed the entire Metro Railway Offices, Stations and works sites.In addition to that Material Management on Scrap arising and disposal are made in order to achieve the Railway Boards target.
