PRESS RELEASE

UPI PAYMENT BASED TICKETING SYSTEM RECEIVES OVERWHELMING RESPONSES

Kolkata, Date: 09.07.2024

UPI Payment Based Ticketing System has been introduced in all the Automatic Smart Card Recharge Machines (ASCRM) installed at stations as well as ticket counters of Blue Line and Green Line.As a result, commuters now don't need to tender the exact fare in currency notes and coins at these stations. Instead, they are now recharging their Smart Cards or purchasing tokens with the help of this alternative system.

After introduction of this UPI based ticketing system in Kolkata Metro, great enthusiasm has been observed amongst the passengers to purchase tokens or Smart Cards with this new system rather than opting for the traditional method of tendering the fare in currency notes.  The passengers are delighted as UPI allows seamless transactions and it saves a lot of time of passengers and enable them to enjoy a smart ticketing system.

In the first week of July (i.e. from 1st to 8th July, 2024), around 25% commuters have opted for this new mode of ticketing system. In stations like Dakshineswar, Baranagar, Esplanade, Rabindra Sarobar, Gitanjali, Sealdah, Howrah and Howrah Maidan, highest number of UPI transactions for purchasing tokens, Smart Cards and recharging Smart Cards have been registered.

It is to be noted that Metro Railway authorities with the help of State Bank of India and Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) have introduced this Unified Payments Interface (UPI) Based Ticketing System.
