Kolkata, Date: 13.06.2024

Metro Railway always gives highest priority to ensure passengers’ comfort and provide snarl-free journey to all.All possible measures are taken on regular basis to make passengers comfortable in the Metro premises.

During the recent heavy downpour when Remal, a cyclonic storm, lashed Kolkata on 27.05.2024, Park Street Metro station and tunnels in between Park Street and Esplanade stations got inundated with rain water for some time.Metro authorities took prompt action to drain out the accumulated water from the station and tunnels and restore normalcy of services at the earliest.

After the heavy rain on 22.05.2024, it was noticed that water ingress inside Gate No. - 3 was substantially more than normal seepage from Diaphragm Wall. During heavy rainfall on 27.05.2024, it was apprehended that there was a direct connection with huge water body to the nearby D-Wall. Accordingly, dye was put in manhole of KMC sewer and it was confirmed that water was coming through the KMC sewer. Metro Railway has conducted a joint inspection with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials on 10.06.2024 to locate the source of water ingress in Park Street Metro station. During this joint inspection by the officials of Civil and Sewerage & Drainage Department of KMC (Executive Engineer level) as well as Metro Railway, it has been found that the century old brick sewer of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, has been silted and has pores and holes in the manhole wall. Three holes have also been found in the wall of the brick sewerthrough which water entered into the station area on 27.05.2024.Metro Railway and KMC authorities are working in tandem to stop recurrence of such incident in future.Engineers of KMC have assured to desilt the brick sewer in order to clear it so that water can pass through it smoothly and repair the wall.Metro Railway has extended helping hands to close the pores/holes of brick sewer of KMC, if required. After repairing these holes of sewer, plastering will be done in order to bring it back to thenormal condition of the sewer.

However, to arrest the seepage from the tunnel wall, Metro Railway has started grouting at locations where visible porous concrete are found in Diaphragm wall. From 25.05.2024 to 10.06.2024, 111 bags of cement have been injected inside the Diaphragm Wall.
