PRESS RELEASE

USE OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC IN METRO PREMISES TO BE STOPPED

Kolkata, Date: 10.06.2024

Pollution due to single-use plastic items has become a very crucial environmental challenge in the world. Facing this challenge, India and many countries in the world have vowed to stop the use of such plastic items. Indian Railways is also committed to take action for mitigation of pollution caused by littered single-use plastic.

Metro users are requested to refrain from using such items in the Metro premises. For achieving that goal, emphasis is being given to reduce and refuse using plastic products and to use inexpensive reusable bags to reduce plastic footprint inside the Metro stations.Metro Railway is making all necessary arrangements to minimize the generation of plastic wastes and also ensuring its eco-friendly disposal at the stations at present. All stakeholders of Kolkata Metro are requested to come forward to make it litter-free. Making Metro plastic-free is not going to be easy and the responsibility is not limited to Metro Railway only, it is also the responsibility of the commuters.

Some of the single-use plastic products are ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks, balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice- cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners, stirrers, etc. These products cause environment pollution as well as their littering creates nuisance. Metro users are aware enough not to use these items in the Metro premises. But in the recent times, it has been observed that a section of them has been making our pride Kolkata Metro dirty by indiscriminately using and throwing these items in the Metro premises. They are discouraged not to indulge in such harmful activities.
