PRESS RELEASE

AROUND 4.65 LAKH PASSENGERS TRAVELLED FROM GREEN LINE 2 TO BLUE LINE TILL MARCH END

Kolkata, Date: 17.04.2024

Since the beginning of the commercial services on under the river stretch of Green Line 2 from 15.03.2024 around 4.65 lakh passengers have travelled from different stations of Green Line to different stations of Blue Line till 31.03.2024. This figure signifies that the interchanging point of these two corridors of Kolkata Metro at Esplanade has enabled the commuters coming from the suburban areas of Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway to travel to any part of the city including the heart of the city i.e. Esplanade easily and comfortably. This facility was unthinkable for these commuters a few days earlier. Out of these 4.65 lakh passengers, 2.51 lakh passengers have terminated their journey at Esplanade.

As per the estimated figure around 2.38 lakh passengers have travelled from Howrah Metro station to different stations of Blue Line and around 2.11 lakh passengers have done the same from Howrah Maidan Metro station. Around 25,000 passengers have travelled to Dumdum and 21,000 passengers have travelled to Kalighat from different stations of Green Line 2 in the said period. Around 13,000 passengers have travelled up to Kavi Subhash from Howrah Maidan, Howrah, Mahakaran Metro stations. Around 11,000 passengers have travelled to Dakshineswar and 14300 passengers have travelled to Rabindra Sadan from different stations of these stretch of Green Line.

In order to make this interchanging smoother and more flexible, queue managers have been installed at Esplanade Metro station to ensure seamless interchange of passengers in between Old Esplanade station (Blue Line) and New Esplanade station (Green Line). These are allowing all passengers to move freely. Strategic installation of these queue managers has also eliminated the possibility of mixing of Green Line and Blue Line bound passengers. This along with numerous banners and stickers already put in place have immensely benefitted the passengers to find their suitable entry/exit points as well as trains smoothly. Metro staff and RPF personnel have been working in tandem to ensure free and fast interchange of passengers at Esplanade specially during the peak hours.
