METRO RAILWAY FULLY GEARS UP FOR THE MONSOON

Monsoon has at last arrived in Kolkata! After the scorching summer it has brought some relief to the Kolkatans. As the parched land is getting the much needed rain drops in this monsoon, Metro Railway has completed full preparation to ensure smooth and glitch-free services for its commuters during the wet season.
As per the instructions of Shri P.Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway a comprehensive plan has been prepared to face any eventuality during this monsoon. Engineering officials and staff have been constantly monitoring the situation and in the underground section sump cleaning is taking place regularly to ensure zero accumulation of rain water. Central drain is also kept clean inside the tunnel so that water flows out smoothly. on the viaduct/surface section proper cleaning of drains are also being ensured in order to discharge rain water in case of heavy downpour. Special care is being taken for maintenance of old pipes and if necessary these pipes are being replaced with new ones in this viaduct section. In spite of that if excess water gets accumulated in any station automatic pumps are kept ready to flush that water out to ensure safety of Metro commuters. Concerned staff have also been instructed to trim the branches of trees around the viaduct if train movement is obstructed. In case of heavy downpour, additional staff and vehicles are kept ready at Belgachia, Park Street and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations in order to take suitable actions for ensuring smooth traffic in Blue Line.
Special care has been taken for maintenance of lifts and escalators at different Metro stations. Staff are being kept at readiness to handle any failure. Metro staff of all concerned departments including Motormen have been advised to report any unwanted incident to the Central Control on real-time basis.
For proper maintenance of signalling and telecom assets, the driving force of the city Metro system, special care has been taken too in this monsoon. Metro officials are remaining alert to identify any vulnerable points and ensure proper earthing of all electrical and signalling equipment. In case of thundershower, proper protection of signalling and power supply instruments against lightening are also being ensured. To avoid any failure during rain, track circuit parameters of relay pickup are regularly being checked in order to ensure safety and smooth movement of Metro rakes.
