Kolkata, Date: 18.04.2023

It’s summer time again! People are finding it very difficult to venture out under the blazing sun. But Kolkata Metro has been the only hope for people looking for a respite. Metro Railway has been providing air-conditioned, fast and comfortable mode of transport to its lakhs of commuters when the temperature of the city is hovering above 40 degree Celsius.

In addition to running all AC fleet, Metro authorities have taken several initiatives to keep the environment at stations and tunnels comfortable for commuters. Under the leadership of Shri P.Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway officers, engineers, staff have been working in tandem to provide best possible services to meet the expectations of the Metro commuters.

In order to make platforms and circulating areas of all the North-South Metro stations cool, 31 AC Plants/ Cooling Towers work round the clock out of the 60 such Plants and Towers. These machines maintain a steady temperature of 27-29 degree Celsius at the underground stations of Blue Line of Kolkata Metro. The rest i.e. 29 AC Plants and Cooling Towers are kept in standby mode to meet any emergency. Metro staff regularly measure the temperatures of platform, circulating area and the tunnels specially during the peak hours and regulate the temperature accordingly. once platform temperature crosses 30 degree Celsius, these standby plants and towers start their operations and bring back the temperature to below 30 degree Celsius. In order to maintain the chilled environment during summer time, these AC Plants and Cooling Towers work additional two hours to maintain the comfort level at the stations. Now-a-days these AC Plants and Cooling Towers have been working from 07.00 am to 10.00 pm daily. Inside the tunnels 35 degree Celsius and 75% of humidity are maintained for providing a comfortable journey.

Kausik Mitra, CPRO has informed that if situation demands in some stations speed of the Intake Fan is also increased to inject more cool air into the platforms. Metro Railway always provides comfortable services to the people of Kolkata at a very cheap and affordable rate.
