PRESS RELEASE

ADDITIONAL DRINKING WATER SUPPLY FACILITY INAUGURATED AT MAHATMA GANDHI ROAD METRO STATION

BELGACHIA TRACTION SUB-STATION UPGRADED TO 33 KV FROM 11 KV

Kolkata, Date: 22.07.2025

Good news for Metro commuters!

In order to further improve passenger amenities in the Metro premises, additional drinking water supply facility has been inaugurated today i.e. 22.07.2025 at Mahatma Gandhi Road Metro station of Blue Line. Shri K. J. Dev Mondal, AXEN/North inaugurated this additional source of supply in presence of Shri P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway and other senior officers. This source will ensure supply of potable water to all the commuters using Mahatma Gandhi Road Metro station. In order to ensure this, an underground water tank of 20,000 litre capacity has been constructed at this station. Shri Reddy has expressed his happiness with the inauguration of this additional source of drinking water supply facility.

In order to upgrade the power supply network from the existing 11 KV to 33 KV for the entire Blue Line of Metro Railway, Kolkata, one of the oldest 11 KV sub-stations of Blue Line at Belgachia has been replaced by a new 33 KV traction sub-station with gas insulated switch gear today i.e. on 22.07.2025. Shri Biswajit Roy, Senior Section Engineer inaugurated this sub-station in the august presence of Shri P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager and other senior officers of Metro Railway. This upgradation to 33 KV network has multiple benefits. It will improve reliability by reducing the number of switchgear/equipment. Distribution loss in cables will also be reduced due to power distribution in higher voltage. As the system uses 12 pulse rectifiers the core loss in transformers will also reduce considerably leading to further power savings. This replacement will save approximately Rs. 350 crores for the entire Blue Line in equipment replacement cost and capitalised energy saving cost. This additional capacity is the first step towards reduced headway in future. It is to be noted that the entire upgradation work has been done without affecting normal Metro services. Very soon the traction sub-station at Dumdum will also be upgraded.
