PRESS RELEASE

METRO GENERATING SOLAR POWER TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINTS

Kolkata, Date:07.06.2025

Metro Railway has been the Lifeline of Kolkata. Over the last 40 years this Railway has achieved many milestones and has been playing a leading role to reduce carbon footprints by generating power from renewable sources to increase the system efficiency. This initiative has got momentum in recent times after Government has adopted a policy of PM Surya Ghar Scheme and fixed the target for Indian Railways to become Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030.

At present Metro Railway has solar power plants of the capacity of 4.556 MWp at various service buildings and carsheds. Out of which, in the Blue Line 1136.5 KWp solar power plants have been installed at Noapara, Dum Dum, Belgachia tunnel Ramp, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Kavi Subhash stations as well as at Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital. In the Green Line 1519 KWp solar power plants have been installed at Salt Lake Sector V, Central Park stations as well as at Central Park Depot. In Purple Line 1400 KWp capacity plant is functional at Joka Carshed. In Orange Line 500 KWp solar power plant is working at the New Carshed at Kavi Subhash. In April, 2025 Metro Railway generated 47.21 thousand units of electricity from solar power.

This solar power generation system of Metro Railway is being monitored through cloud-based monitoring system. Presently Metro Railway has been producing 57 lakh units of solar energy every year and reducing 49 lakh ton carbon footprints yearly.

To augment this production capacity further, installation of 1500 KWp solar power plant is going on near Jessore Road Metro station. This plant is coming up on ground. At Jessore Road Metro station and other service buildings 654 KWp plants are also being installed. Another 800 KWp solar power plants are coming up at Tollygunj Carshed and on the roofs of various small buildings and quarters.

Seeing Metro Railway's impressive performance, Raiway Board has sanctioned solar power plants of 4000 KWp capacity on the ground of Noapara and 5000 KWp capacity on the roofs of Noapara Carshed. Different stations of Orange Line and Purple Line are also going to get solar power plants. All these stations will generate 14500 KWp electricity to mitigate their demand.

At present Metro Railway daily generates 16000 units of solar power on an average. After installation of these solar power plants, Metro Railway's solar power generation capacity will increase to 110000 units per day.

Metro is aiming to achieve this milestone for reducing carbon emission for a better tomorrow.
