Kolkata, Date: 22.10.2024

Metro Railway has been celebrating 40 years of its glorious service to the Nation from 18th October to 24th October, 2024. As a part of this celebration, the Heritage Run of an NGEF rake was organised today (i.e. 22.10.2024) from Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station to Maidan station of Blue Line to revisit the Non-AC era of Metro Railway, Kolkata.   Shri P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway, Kolkata flagged off the Heritage Run in presence of Smt. Mamata Shankar, famous danseuse and Shri Goutam Ghosh, famous film director who incidentally had travelled in the Metro on the first day i.e. on 24th October, 1984. Smt. P Sreelatha, President of Metro Railway Women Welfare Organisation (MRWWO), all senior officers of Metro Railway and other commuters enjoyed this Heritage Journey on this 6.1 km stretch.

Sharing his personal experience of his maiden ride in Metro Railway, Kolkata in 1984 as a student, Shri Reddy has expressed his satisfaction to head this organisation when it is turning 40. Talking to the media persons, he has said that in the coming days, Metro will expand further and reach new corners and surrounding areas to make commuting easy and fast for all.  Metro Railway, Kolkata is the torch bearer of all Metro systems in India, he added.

Shri Goutam Ghosh and Smt. Mamata Shankar were both delighted to take a ride in a Non-AC Metro rake after a gap of forty years.  In these forty years, Metro Railway has improved a lot and carried millions of passengers safely to their destinations which is a matter of pride for all, they said.

In today’s Heritage Ride, Rake No: N-16/18 was used. This rake was inducted in Metro’s fleet on 13.05.1992 and used for the last time for commercial service on 26.12.2020.  This Heritage Journey started from Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Station at 12.43 hrs and ended at Maidan station at 12.58 hrs.  All the on-board passengers were elated as the rake chugged along the stretch.  Commuters waiting for the Metro in between stations were seen waiving to the rake and taking photographs.

This rake manufactured with the electricals from National Government Electrical Factory (NGEF) is the showcase of self-reliance of Indian Railways own production Unit at Perambur. This Metro rake was manufactured by ICF with electrics from NGEF. In the first commercial run, one such NGEF rake was introduced on 24th October, 1984. Out of the eight coaches of an NGEF rake, six coaches used to be DMC (Driving Motor Coach) and NDMC (Non-Driving Motor Coach). These coaches used to be powered by motor coaches, each having four number of series type DC traction motors.
