METRO RAILWAY CELEBRATING ITS 40 GLORIOUS YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE NATION

 

Kolkata, Date:09.10.2024

 

Metro Railway, Kolkata is going to complete 40 glorious years of service to the Nation o­n 24.10.2024. Since its inception o­n 24.10.1984, Metro Railway, Kolkata, India’s first Metro system has travelled a long way and carried millions of passengers to their destinations safely. Starting with a stretch of o­nly 3.4 kms from Esplanade to Bhawanipore (now Netaji Bhavan) Metro Railway now has a network of 58.6 km connecting different corners of the city. Thousands of passengers from Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Medinipur, North and South 24 Parganas and of other states have been travelling under the river Ganges daily in Metro. This transformation from under the surface to under the river, both for the first time in the country has made our Metro a special o­ne in the country. In the coming days Metro is going to connect Airport, Rajarhat, New Town and many new areas in order to make living easy and fast as well as improve socio-economic condition of lakhs of people.

 

Being the torchbearer in the field of Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), completion of the 40 years of the ‘Lifeline of Kolkata’ is going to be a momentous occasion and a matter of pride for all the stakeholders. To mark this occasion, Metro Railway authorities have made elaborate plans to celebrate it in a grand way from 18th October to 24th October, 2024. A logo for this event has already been prepared and different competitions, Heritage Walk, Walkathon, Exhibition, Cultural Evening etc. have been planned in order to make it a memorable occasion. Special films have been made where daily commuters to celebrities have shared their views about our own Metro. A special cover and stamp will also be released during this celebrations.
