The procurement process goes on throughout the year as per the procurement calendar which specifies category wise item for which procurement action is to be initiated. The procurement is done through advertised tenders for all tenders valuing more than Rs. 10 lakh except for PAC items. For items valuing less than 10 lakh, the same are purchased through limited tenders. With introduction of IREPS expected within October 2012, limited tenders will be gradually phased out and all tenders will be published in IREPS for complete transparency. As per current policy, preference is given to items manufactured & sold in India, Second preference is given to imported items or items made from imported raw materials if available in India through authorized stockiest & third preference to pure import which is rarely resorted to. For all the procurements, powers to buy are delegated rank wise to officers. The procurement of major items like complete train rakes , Rail engines, wheels and Axles etc. are done by the Ministry of Railways/Govt. Of India.
Metro Railway is procuring item like oils and lubricants from Indian oil companies , major electrical items from Electrical companies like Bharat Heavy Electricals, and Steel material & Rails from SAIL etc.
